School Councils Take Action

Breakfast Time
   
  • Initiating and helping to organise breakfast clubs ensuring that all pupils have access to a healthy breakfast before they start the day.
  • Involvement in promoting or helping to organise after school clubs in school, promoting a scheme to encourage students to take part in clubs or Youth groups in their local community.
  • Campaign to improve, maintain and open sports facilities in your area.
  • Developing and running Fruit Tuck Shops at break time
 
     

Getting to School
 
  • Could you be involved in a 'safe routes to school' project like a 'walking bus' scheme?
  • Can you think of any other schemes that would cut down on pollution and provide a safe way to get to school?
  • Can your school do anything to improve local transport services in your community and promote their use?
  • Could you lobby the council for safer streets around the school, e.g traffic humps and crossings to slow down traffic?
 
     


In the Playground
     
  • Why do you think Sam's friend (see quiz) is being bullied?
  • Can you think of any examples you might have experienced?
  • Find newspaper cuttings and discuss the recent case of Damiola Taylor. Could this happen in your area?
  • What can we do to prevent this tragedy in the future?How is bullying dealt with in your school?
  • Could you start a 'Playground Buddies' or 'Playground Peacemakers' scheme?
  • What are other ways that students can take responsibility for their own and each others behaviour?
  • Think about bullying on a global scale. Do countries bully other countries and how might they do this and why?
  • Is your School Council involved in helping your school to develop an anti-bullying campaign?
 

 

 


In the Lesson
     
  • Do you understand some of the issues that have led to an increase in the need for more supply staff in schools?
  • What is the situation in your school?
  • Could your school develop a student led induction for long term supply staff?
  • Could your School Council be involved in ensuring students have a say in the effectiveness of supply teachers and voice any concerns they may have?
  • Could your School Council be actively involved in developing a behaviour policy to encourage students to take responsibility for their own and each others' behaviour and learning?
 

 

 

At Work
     
  • Does your school use recycled paper?
  • Does your school recycle paper or other materials?
  • Could you introduce a recycling project in your school through your School Council and how?
  • Do you have a local scrap scheme that may be able to help you as well as provide recycled resources to your school such as paper, wood and computer equipment?
  • How can you campaign for everyone in your school to think about re-using resources in your school?
  • Find out about recycling projects in other countries using the internet.
 
     

On the Way Home
     
  • Ask your teachers if they drink Fairtrade/organic tea and coffee in the Staff Room.
  • Speak to your catering staff and find out whether there are any Fairtrade/organic products that could be introduced in your schools canteen.
  • Make recommendations to staff about a Fairtrade policy e.g using Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar in the staff room, Fairtrade bananas in your Fruit Tuck Shop.
  • Could you introduce a Fairtrade/organic tuck-shop?
  • Consider the following quote and find out where some of our daily food is produced.

Free Time
     
  • Can your school get involved in community led 'Out of Hours' schemes?
  • Could your School Council collect a list of youth clubs, activity centres, sports and other clubs in your area and find a way of letting students know what's available to them?
  • Could you establish a pupil mentor scheme so that more able/older students can share their knowledge and skills with others?
