Global and Local: a close relationship

With science humans have developed an awareness of the interdependence of the systems and communities that make up the world, and the consequences of our individual actions on our planet.

New forms of communication have made us realise our neighbours, instead of around the corner, can be thousands of miles away; that our communities are dependent upon each other; that simple decisions such as those of shopping can either help support child labour and exploitative companies or those who care about their communities.

We are all global citizens, but what kind?

Do we know what our actions are doing? How do we behave towards our neighbours? Are we trying to help the world? Are we trying to reduce our impact on the world?

“ City of Dreams” Algeria hosts thousands of refugees from the Western Sahara. Here, Saharawi children present their picture of the homeland they’ve never seen.

Local

What we do as individuals each day helps make us one of the most destructive species of the planet. What we eat! How we use water! How we travel! What we throw away! What we buy! How we vote! How much energy we use!

To help our planet to survive, and even to help keep its beauty and add to it through justice, culture and art, we need to become active citizens in our local communities. We need to feel that we can make a change. This website celebrates the local changes made by individuals around the world and thereby encourages others to help their planet.
