Mandela at 90

To celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday teachers and children shared a cake with the Deputy Mayor, Ahmed Omer, at the Town Hall. The event opened the ’Fair Play Wall’, as part of Black History Month and Local Democracy Week. Councillors Clair Hawkins and Ann Jackson, and Mark Beacon, Campaign’s Manager for Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) unveiled the wall; with the support of primary school councillors and their support teachers from Cayley, John Scurr, Kobi Nazrul, Lawdale, Manorfield and Seven Mills Primary Schools.
The aim is to celebrate and promote children and young people discussing and learning about the importance of democracy and accountable government to their lives and to the lives of people around the world.
As school councils discuss and sign the ‘Declaration for Democracy’ they will be displayed on this wall and then replaced with school council constitutions, created through whole school discussions and votes.
