After the first session the students were invited to the Professional Development Centre to attend a day conference. The aim of the conference was to give the students an opportunity to explore their issues through taking part in activites and interviewing experts on the specific issues.

One of the activities carried out on that day was the value line discussion. The classes were divided into groups and were asked how strongly they agreed or disagreed with certain statements. After a short discussion, a representative of the each group was then asked to come to the front and stand along the line according to the extent of their agreement or disagreement.They had the task of giving reasons for their grooup's decision.

Here are some of the comments from the conference.

Do you think you have the power to change the world?

"We believe we can make a difference, because we are children and we have dreams and when we grow up we can make our dream come true"

"If we are determined to change the world, then we can change the world"

"We are only children, that’s why we have no power"

"I can't change the world as I am a child and not many children are famous or popular. Children can only make a difference if they are famous"

"We don't have the power to change the world because we are children and the government won't listen to us because we are children. If we want our voice to be heard then we would need to protest"

"We believe we have some powers. We can make some difference, maybe not to the world but to the individuals for example dropping litter and stopping pollution"

Should all children work to help their family?

"Yes children should work to help their family because they are part of their family and they would show respect through their work"

"We all should work to help our family, and people who don't work to help their family are lazy"

"If the family are in desperate situation then the child should work"

"Children who work should give some to the family and keep other money for them selves"


During June 2005 the students from all three schools came to city learning centre to create their own website and animation on issues they had done their research. Here are some pictures of the students making the animation from the day.
