Focus on Disability - Hidden Voices

In celebration of the theme of International Day of Disabled Persons
Making the MDGs Inclusive: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world – HEC organised an event with Tower Hamlets Council and ADD (Action on Disability and Development). The event aimed to include the voices of children, including those with disabilities, in the development of the school inclusion policy. Three schools attended the morning which was organised to discuss the rights of disabled children.
The children interviewed three guests: disabled teenage cricketer Ryan Jones, who at the age of 11 won London’s ‘Junior Sportsman of the Year’ for disabled athletes, and who has been chosen to represent the England Blind Cricket Team and who also coaches children; Mozammel Haque, a disability rights activist from Bangladesh, who has worked nationally in Bangladesh to ensure disabled people have a voice and claim their rights and access to services; Susan Mulligan, Communications and Engagement Officer, Tower Hamlets Children, Schools and Families.
The children created interview based web broadcasts with the three guests and reported on what they had learnt to the whole conference, with feedback from their guest interviewees. In the Council debating chamber they then proposed, and voted on statements which they would put into a policy for their school on disability rights. 
The event was reported on in the evening at a meeting of councillors and officers, who saw a powerpoint and video extracts from the interviews. After which they heard presentations from Mozammel Haque and David Morris from the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The presentations were followed by questions and discussion.
