what about climate change?

The connections between SMSC and global learning are many and far reaching.  Schools can offer a range of opportunities for children and young people to develop their self-esteem and confidence as local and global citizens.  Teaching that encourages participation, critical and creative thinking, reflection and independence will have much to contribute to SMSC.  As will activities that develop team-work, leadership skills and collaboration.

Global learning can make an excellent lens through which to view SMSC.  The knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to secure a just and sustainable world for everyone are easily aligned with the requirements of SMSC aspects of learning—meaning schools can approach these valuable learning opportunities in a holistic and joined-up way.

SMSC and Global Learning Accreditation and Awards can be mutually supportive in the following ways:

  • SMSC work can provide a school-wide framework for meaningful global learning initiatives and collaboration;
  • Approaching SMSC and Global Learning in a joined-up, holistic way can bring meaningful context to both initiatives;
  • Global Learning awards and accreditation can provide valuable recognition for aspects of SMSC provision;
  • Global Learning can provide real, meaningful purpose to SMSC work, bringing excitement and motivation to learning opportunities.
  • Global Learning can broaden horizons and open minds, preparing learners to be confident when meeting others and more accepting of differences and diversity;
  • International learning partnerships can bring SMSC learning alive: learning about real people, living real lives, in real places.

Accreditation for elements of SMSC work can be gained by following recognised and respected global learning schemes, such as the International Schools Award, Rights Respecting Schools Award, Eco-Schools or Fair Trade School Status.
