TOYS AND RECYCLABLES

From now until Summer 2007,
there is an extraordinary collection of handmade toys
in the Museum of Childhood
All of them carefully built and decorated using recyclable materials and everyday items easily found around the home.

As the artist Renzo Laporta reveals:

“The Toys & Recyclables collection is part of my special effort to make easy and affordable toys available to everyone through the building of ten traditional toys.

Thinking globally and acting locally, these toys are teaching us a joyful way to take care of the world.

It re-awakes children’s participation and creativity, promoting a cultural alternative to the current global market of mass produced toys"

It comprises a series of Toy-making workshops for families and schools led by Renzo Laporta every Tuesday, starting at 12.30 till 2.30pm.

Cars from recyclable materials

Small Cars
The juicy fruity bottle has a handy and nice stream-lined design.
Add four slices of a big cork as wheels (alternatively you can use discs made using cardboard or plastic lids)
Its two axis are made with pieces of bamboo sticks, rolled into pieces of drinking straw.
Decorating
with coloured tape gives the bottle a chance of becoming a competitive Small Car to play with.
This offers an example of simple technology, easy to use and make, and really functional.
