According
to recent research by
the Independent Television Commission:
"Children in the UK aged six to sixteen spend about three
hours a day
watching TV compared to two hours elsewhere in Europe."
The Tower Hamlets Education Project enables pupils to explore photography
and video as means of discovery and expression.
|
 |
| |
|
|
Instead of being passive observers of TV,
the pupils participate in the making of films
about waste and recycling and explore
their own environment with photography.
This
process has helped them to become
critical viewers with an understanding of how
video and photography can be used
to communicate ideas.
By
enabling pupils to experience being
'on the other side' of the camera, they were able to discover
first-hand the technical and creative possibilities of video.

Media
literacy is the ability to understand how the mass media works.
Understanding of how TV shapes opinions is crucial for younger
children who are among the nation's heaviest viewers.
By
failing to help them create media literacy skills they will
be unable to analyse critically what they see.
Furthermore,
their developing conciousness of themselves will be controlled
by interest and consumer groups remote from them with their
own values and agendas.
|
 |
| |
 |
The
young people whose work is featured in the following films,
developed their media literacy through photography and video.
They
were able to critically evaluate the world around them in order
to assist them to fully and effectively participate in it.
Photography
provides the excitement of capturing and freezing a moment,
an object, a smile, and an event with the power to revisit.
It
is a creative process that occupies the pupil physically and
psychologically.

These
films represent a journey of discovery in a small part of the
environment in East London.
It is a journey, which all children should be introduced to if
future generations are to be equipped with the skills needed to
address the challenge of environmental protection and climate change.
